Function Over Form: SKT vs ROX [27 Jan 2016]

SKT didn’t pick super off meta champions at Worlds, and the Tigers did with green slimes. They did allow MaRin to indulge in Rumble which worked well for their strategy.

Pick/ban stage is always tricky: Teams ban power picks or take them, or use bans against targeted players or take those champions away. In between, there are comfort picks which may not be strong in the meta, but works for the team as in the case of MaRin’s Rumble. But one basic principle will always blanket champion selection: The number of hard initiation CCs.

CC doesn’t always win games but they certainly help a lot. Hard initiations mean teams start fights on their own terms, using advantages of terrain, timing, CDs etc. to the effect of the team. Without a proper initiation, team fights can only be won by catching someone out, disengaging and re-engaging or reacting to mistakes—all of which are too dependent on your opponent.

Out of the 10 top picks this season, 5 are teamfight initiators: Alistar, Elise, Rek’sai, Thresh and Lissandra. Out of these, 3 possess AoE CC. In the 9 games SKT has played so far, their top 2 heaviest losses, including Game 3 vs ROX, were attributed to an utter lack of hard initiation CC.

Comparisons between teams & the no. hard engage CCs

In all of SKT’s wins, they had a comparable number of hard initiation CCs with their opponents, with only 1 anomaly (Game 2 vs SSG). In the 4 games SKT dropped versus JAG and ROX, their team composition was lacking in this department.

The 2 most painful were Game 2 vs JAG where SKT had no hard initiation CC at all, and Game 3 vs ROX where they were relying solely on Elise’s cacoon, with slows from Tahm Kench, Trundle and blue Ezreal. While SKT’s strategy coming into this game with the double AD composition might have differed (split push), ROX sure showed them what a stampede looks like, turning around SKT’s initial catch onto Graves.

“One time I thought I found the hero… but he died.”

Going by the numbers and amount of AoE CC, only in Game 1 did SKT come close. Intricate and skillful teamfighting by every member, they pulled out of a 3-way flank by ROX, fully utilizing Faker’s CC-filled Lissandra, giving Bang his second Quadra in one game.

“Time for a true display of skill!”

Moving forward for the rest of the season, SKT might want to look to lock ‘em up more. If there’s one thing to learn from ROX’s drafting over 3 games is that teams must adapt, or be removed.
